How JMCX, led by James McIntyre, partnered with Cashrewards (ANZ Bank) to identify loyalty leaks, improve member engagement, and drive more sustainable growth across the member lifecycle.
At a glance:
End-to-end customer journey mapping grounded in real member behaviour
Identified critical drop-off points and moments of friction across lifecycle stages
Quantified where value was being lost and prioritised opportunities for impact
Aligned leadership and teams around growth, retention, and engagement priorities
Outcomes included reduced early-stage churn, improved member retention and repeat engagement, and clearer prioritisation of growth initiatives beyond acquisition.
Cashrewards is one of Australia’s leading cashback platforms, connecting 2 million members with over 2,000 retail partners, including Amazon, Apple, Coles and Myer through a performance-driven rewards model.
Despite strong brand awareness and ongoing investment in acquisition, Cashrewards faced challenges converting growth into sustained member engagement and long-term retention. While acquisition volumes remained healthy, churn across early lifecycle stages was limiting lifetime value and overall program efficiency.
To unlock sustainable growth, Cashrewards needed to better understand where members were disengaging, what was driving churn, and how to strengthen ongoing participation across the platform.
Cashrewards faced several interconnected challenges:
Strong top-of-funnel acquisition, but elevated churn in early and mid-lifecycle stages
Inconsistent engagement behaviour across member segments
Drop-off between sign-up, first purchase, and repeat usage
Limited shared visibility across teams on where value was being lost
Growth efforts optimised for acquisition, rather than lifetime value and retention
As a result, growth was harder to sustain and increasingly costly to maintain.
JMCX partnered with Cashrewards to create clarity, focus, and momentum across customer growth and retention.
My approach focused on:
Mapping the end-to-end member journey, from acquisition through repeat usage and retention
Identifying critical churn points and behavioural drop-offs across lifecycle stages
Analysing the drivers of disengagement impacting repeat usage and lifetime value
Clarifying the member value proposition at key moments in the journey
Redesigning priority touchpoints to improve relevance, clarity, and participation
Aligning marketing, CX, and product teams around shared growth and retention metrics
This ensured effort was focused on the moments that most strongly influence customer growth, engagement, and retention.
A clear, end-to-end view of the Cashrewards member journey
Identified and prioritised churn and retention opportunities
Improved lifecycle clarity across acquisition, activation, and repeat usage
Uplifted key engagement and retention touchpoints
Stronger alignment between growth strategy, execution, and measurement
Reduction in early-stage churn
Improved member retention and repeat engagement
Clearer articulation of the Cashrewards value proposition
More efficient growth through improved lifecycle performance
Stronger alignment between acquisition, retention, and partner activity
This engagement focused on understanding the entire Cashrewards member lifecycle, not isolated channels or touchpoints. Rather than optimising acquisition or individual campaigns, the work stepped back to examine how members moved from sign-up through repeat usage, disengagement, and long-term value.
A critical factor was the use of cross-functional workshops with the leadership team, followed by a whole-of-company strategy day. This created shared understanding across marketing, product, CX, and partnerships — replacing fragmented assumptions with a single, evidence-based view of where value was being created and lost.
By grounding decisions in real member behaviour and aligning teams around a shared journey and common metrics, Cashrewards shifted focus from short-term acquisition efficiency to behaviour change that compounds lifetime value. This alignment enabled clearer prioritisation, faster decision-making, and sustained improvement across the full lifecycle not just early-stage activation.
